Given our school’s demographics, several Summit Academy teachers are likely to have English as a New Language (ENL) scholars within their classrooms. Support will either occur in a stand-alone setting, or with traditional support from their content teachers. The Stand-alone ENL class is based on language and literacy centers and designed to target the language and literacy levels of each student, using a developmental framework and leveled text, while scholars who are English Language learners require instructional modifications and support systems in order to further develop language skills and best access Summit Academy’s curriculum. In the most literal sense, modifying instruction for ENL scholars is simply an extension of differentiating instruction techniques that good teachers implement on a regular basis. Teachers must modify teaching strategies to accommodate scholars’ language development (i.e. help them build English speaking, writing, and reading skills, as well as to ensure they can access the school’s curriculum).
